		<front>The strength of Permalite-Jenolite <lb/></front>

<body>Two of the leading names in metal surface
treatment, <lb/>Jenolite and Permalite, have joined forces as a result of <lb/>the Satra
Group&apos;s purchase of the Jenolite Division of <lb/>Duckhams Oils from the BP Group.
In the industrial <lb/>sector, Jenolite technology in phosphating, metal <lb/>cleaning
and paint stripping will be sold alongside <lb/>Permalite&apos;s expertise in
electroplating, anodising and <lb/>metal cleaning processes. In fact, 70 per cent of the
<lb/>business both Permalite and Jenolite are engaged in is <lb/>corrosion resistance.
<lb/>In the retail and D.I.Y. market, the Jenolite brand is <lb/>being developed
separately. <lb/>This coming together of Permalite-Jenolite is the <lb/>latest step in
the Satra Group&apos;s development of a Surface <lb/>Coating Division. Satra are
currently looking at other <lb/>acquisitions that will fit into this development.
<lb/>Permalite-Jenolite administration, R&amp;D and sales <lb/>operates from Vincent
Lane, Dorking, with manufacture <lb/>of both Permalite and Jenolite products at a 20,000
ft 2 <lb/>production facility in Egham, fully equipped with quality <lb/>control
laboratories. <lb/>By maximum utilisation of these laboratory facilities in
<lb/>manufacturing control, the company policy will be to <lb/>give 100 per cent quality
assurance on all Permalite and <lb/>Jenolite products. <lb/>Permalite was founded some
25 years ago and has <lb/>built up a reputation in the metal finishing and allied
<lb/>industries as innovators in the development of leading <lb/>metal finishing
processes, such as Solarbrite nickels, <lb/>Microsol chrome, Permachrome and Oztelloy,
the latter <lb/>being the world&apos;s only commercial process for
electro-<lb/>deposition of a stainless steel type finish. <lb/>The company does not
market or manufacture other <lb/>people&apos;s processes under licence — it is all their
own <lb/>development — and is novel in this respect in the <lb/>speciality chemical
field. It will continue this policy with <lb/>all Jenolite as well as Permalite
products. <lb/>Jenolite&apos;s history goes back to the. early 1950&apos;s,
<lb/>covering the entire field of metal surface treatment. <lb/>Today, there are some
200 Jenolite products, ranging <lb/>from rust removers to degreasers, to phosphating
<lb/>processes to composite metal cleaners, de-waterers and <lb/>paint strippers. These
are widely used throughout all <lb/>corners of industry, including the Ministry of
			Defence. <lb/>
Recent breakthrough <lb/>A recent breakthrough in technology was Jenolite
<lb/>Koldblak. Operating at room temperature, this produces <lb/>an excellent black
oxide coating on steels, excluding <lb/>stainless, and the finish is said to be as good
as, and <lb/>often better than, that produced by the traditional hot <lb/>caustic
method. The Koldblak finish film is strong and, <lb/>when treated, is very durable.
<lb/>The Jenolite brand is also strong in the retail and D.I.Y. <lb/>market, where
customers purchase Jenolite rust removers <lb/>and preventers for use on their cars as
well as in the <lb/>home. They also sell to large builders merchants and <lb/>industrial
distributors who in turn serve the small end of <lb/>the industrial market.
<lb/>Jenolite are currently giving a new marketing boost to <lb/>their retail products
in leading DIY stores, including <lb/>Halfords, Texas and B &amp; Q. This includes
existing <lb/>products such as rust removers and preventers, degreas-<lb/>ers and paint
strippers, plus environmental products. <lb/>The strength of Permalite-Jenolite lies in
a sensible <lb/>getting-together of professionals who between them <lb/>have perhaps
most, if not all, the answers as to how to <lb/>treat metals, whether they be aluminium,
steel, die-cast <lb/>zinc, copper or iron, whether they have to be degreased,
<lb/>plated, anodised or passivated. In fact, 70 per cent of the <lb/>business both
Permalite and Jenolite are engaged upon <lb/>is corrosion resistance. It is worth
mentioning that in the <lb/>UK alone for current technology the market potential is
<lb/>very conservative £20m p.a. <lb/>One of the outcomes of this pooling of knowledge
is <lb/>that Permalite-Jenolite are now able to offer metal <lb/>finishers a full survey
			— free of charge — to check the <lb/>efficiency of their processes from pretreatment
right the <lb/>way through to final finish together with advice on how <lb/>to maintain
quality assurance. <lb/>Permalite-Jenolite marketing policy operates on the
<lb/>principle of &apos;similar products, similar volumes, similar <lb/>prices&apos;, in
that it conforms to the existing EEC <lb/>regulations of treating all customers equally,
whether <lb/>they are jobbing platers or Austin-Rover. <lb/></body>
